District heating systems were re-introduced in the 1980s, with automatic control, remote monitoring and un-manned operations. Today district heating covers about 60% of the heat demand in Denmark.

Denmark has six large central DH areas with a total heat production of approximately 70 petajoules (PJ) per year. There are more than 400 district heating companies in Denmark which District Heating Association represents. These companies supply 98 % of the district heating sold in Denmark to more than 1.6 million households.
